Description

This 1934 article gives a biography of Richard Keith Call, which discusses his family history and his military and political career. In the article, it is mentioned that Call's family owned five enslaved African Americans when they left Kentucky in his younger years. It also quotes Call as saying "There is not room enough for two nations between the Great Lakes and the Gulf, but the institution of slavery could not be stopped in its career of usefulness to the whole world; that an inferior race, domesticated with and attached to the American people were doing a great commercial work." His racist beliefs are not only evident in the article's discussion of his position on slavery but in the discussion of Call's role in killing indigenous people during wars working under Andrew Jackson. Though the writer of the article certainly means to praise Call, it is clear evidence not only of his racism but of racism in Florida and America at large.
