Laura Randall Call, daughter of Richard Keith and Mary Call, was three years old when she died of malaria along with her siblings Richard Jackson Call and Mary Ann W. Call. Malaria is a disease carried by mosquitoes to humans. It is thought that European colonizers brought malaria to America as they forcibly brought Africans to the continent as enslaved people. In the nineteenth century, malaria was a common disease in the southern United States, as the wet and hot climate is ideal for mosquitoes who carry the disease.[2]
